Only a few more months until Cyber Monday. That means you need to learn how to surf the net without your boss finding out. I’m not an advocate of online shopping on company time please don’t fire me but Cyber Monday is the one day to break the rules. How else am I supposed to find Cyber Monday specials? On my hour-long lunch break? Please.
Disclaimer: You may be fired for doing any or all of the below. If you actually like your job, search for Cyber Monday specials at home.
Surfing the Net at Work: It’s All An Act
It’s all about body language. Frown at the screen. Pound the keyboard. Squint at the monitor. While your co-workers leisurely shop Cyber Monday specials, act like you can’t be bothered. Get on the phone if you have to or slam your fist on the desk. Pull off a Sean Penn performance and your boss will be none the wiser. But if you act worse than Britney Spears in Crossroads, consider yourself fired.
Hide and Seek with the Browser
If you want to find those cool Cyber Monday deals, learn how to hide your browser. Your company will be super busy after the holiday weekend. The last thing your boss wants to see is a Cyber Monday specials screen on your monitor. Resize your browser window to fit inside your Outlook preview pane. If your boss glances inside your cube – it appears like you’re responding to an important e-mail. He might even shake his head and say, “At least someone is working around here.” Wink, wink.
What are You Looking At?
Last, but not least is this fun little trick. Firefox users can make web pages look like a standard MS Word docs. Click “view”, then “page style”, and then “no style”. It should bring up the barebones of the webpage. Search Cyber Specials like you normally would, but without the flash and colors. Your boss won’t recognize Amazon.com without its distinctive design. While you’re shopping, it looks like you’re working on TPS reports. Brilliant!
Remember, don’t get caught searching for Cyber Monday specials. It might be the biggest online retail shopping day of of the year, but it’s not a free-for-all. If you must partake, but you’re scared of your boss – call in sick.
