Ask someone if they’ll be shopping on Cyber Monday and they’ll likely give you a blank stare. Everyone knows about Black Friday –- the mad rush for the newest toy or gaming system; the bruised ankles from badly piloted shopping carts; the sight of shoppers camped out at strip malls waiting for deals. Few know about Cyber Monday specials, but Cyber Monday is gaining ground as the other officially named shopping day.
Held the Monday after Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday is the opposite of Black Friday. Shoppers can search for Cyber Monday specials within the comforts of their homes or offices and find gifts without waiting in long lines. No screaming kids, no fist fights over toys, no epic search for a parking spot — just a shopper, a computer, and Cyber Monday specials.
Cyber Monday was born in November, 2005. Shop.org, part of the National Retail Federation coined the neologism based on research that 77% of online retailers had a surge in sales the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2004.
The phenomenon occurs because shoppers, fresh from Black Friday return to work and search for Cyber Monday specials on high-speed connections. It’s a bad day for employee productivity, but a very good day for e-tailers.
Does the birth of Cyber Monday mean the death of Black Friday? Because many people thrive on hectic holiday shopping, Americans will probably never see the death of Black Friday. And Cyber Monday – coming up on its 3rd birthday and a mere toddler in the retail world – is just starting to catch on. This year, be ready to search for Cyber Monday specials on Monday, December 1, 2008.
