Four Reasons to Shop Cyber Monday Instead of Black Friday

Sure we all grew up with Black Friday. The crowds, the fads and everything else that signifies the start to the holiday shopping season is emblazoned in our hearts and minds. Who can forget those frivolous toys that took off because of the hype of Black Friday like the Tickle Me Elmo or those cute Teletubby bean bags?

Whether Black Friday conjures up positive memories of an upcoming season holiday break, or of the day following Thanksgiving makes you think of a darker side to the world of brick or mortar shopping depends on if you’ve kept up on the recent news.

Cyber Monday, the official online start to the holiday shopping season, is a much more recent phenomenon. The push for greater online user audiences has moved Cyber Monday from the realm of fad to the realm of trend and tradition.

We think Cyber Monday keeps many of the benefits that make shoppers fill the malls on Black Friday: the great deals, amazing online coupons, and store wide discounts, without having any of Black Friday’s darker side.

Here are four reasons Cyber Monday is a better day to shop for specials and deals:

Cyber Monday doesn’t sound like it was created by Darth Vader: Okay, maybe that is an overstatement. Still, just because black ink indicates positive returns doesn’t mean the name ‘Black Friday’ is good marketing. No one likes to shop when they’re depressed, and Black Friday sounds more like the namesake to a horrific massacre than the most popular day of the year to go shopping.

The crowds and lines: Most cities see store lines on Black Friday that are as long as 3 to 4 hours. They are no lines in the world of online shopping. Cyber Monday 2 Black Friday 0.

You (likely) won’t get killed if you shop Cyber Monday specials: Black Friday is notorious for its shopper injuries and even shopper fatalities. As frantic shoppers fight for the best deals, people get trampled, injured…even shot. Last year, a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death in a human “stampede” and two people shot and killed one another at a Toys R Us in California.

You can shop for Cyber Monday Specials at work: Spending the entire day after Thanksgiving shopping may or may not be your idea of a good time. But a better time can be had when you get your errands done at the office. Since Cyber Monday is on weekday, it gives shoppers the unique opportunity to get those holiday errands taken care of without having to sacrifice one minute of your four day Thanksgiving weekend. Just don’t be stupid and get caught.

To be fair, Cyber Monday is only a big day of shopping because of the much bigger tradition of Black Friday that precedes it. But when did tradition ever hold the internet back from cannibalizing its brick-and-mortar big brothers? Never.

If the comparisons are any indication, it looks like changing your holiday shopping schedule from Black Friday to Cyber Monday will not only save you lots of time, it might even save your life.
