Wal-Mart employee killed in a Black Friday stampede. Yeah, that really happened last year. With the current economic climate, it’s possible that even more desperate shoppers will resort to a Black Friday mob in the quest to save cash for the holidays.

Just in time for Cyber Monday specials, Walmart.com is introducing discount caskets starting around $900. Wal-Mart must figure if you can’t do anything to stop the mob, you might as well exploit the untapped market.

wal mart casketWal-Mart isn’t the first major retailer to sell caskets and urns online (Costco also sells caskets and other funeral products), but with a selection of 14 out of 1 caskets under $2,000, and deals like the “Dad remembered” or “Mom remembered” steel caskets at $999, these Cyber Monday specials might be too hard to pass up in this economy.

According to this AP report, federal law requires funeral homes to accept third-party caskets. While buying the last resting place for your loved one at Wal-Mart might be slightly impersonal, the move to sell caskets by the largest retailer arounddoes up a stop to unreasonable funeral home price mark ups.

Sure, funeral homes can offer the ability to comfort during such a trying time, but they can’t offer the satisfaction of truly cradle-to-the-grave savings like this Cyber Monday special from Wal-Mart.
