A Look at Cyber Monday Specials, So Far

Posted on 18. Aug, 2008 by in Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday…Whoa, Cyber Monday, won’t go away (ba-da ba-da-da-da)…..Cyber Monday, it’s here to stay (ba-da ba-da-da-da). Sing it with me.

Maybe the Mamas and the Pappas were on to something with the 1966 hit, “Monday, Monday”. Obviously, I altered the lyrics since neither Cyber Monday nor the Internet existed back then, but ever since I heard about Cyber Monday, I can’t get the darn song out of my head.

Will Cyber Monday go away? Is Cyber Monday here to stay? The Mommas and the Papas weren’t singing about Cyber Monday, but I’d like to know. Let’s take a look at Cyber Monday, past and present.

Cyber Monday Specials Start in 2005

Before the name came the idea. In 2004, E-tailers noticed a surge in shopping the Monday after Thanksgiving. The research showed a spike in sales as shoppers return to work to complete their holiday shopping using their company’s high-speed internet connections. Researches also noticed a spike in unemployment. Well, that’s not exactly true, but I do wonder how many people got fired because they got caught searching for Cyber Monday specials at work.

Shop.org coined the name. Colorful names like Blue Monday (too sad), Green Monday (too environmental), and Black Monday (copycat) were suggested but marketers finally settled on Cyber Monday.

In 2005, the Cyber Monday deals started. E-Bay, Amazon, and even the World Wildlife Fund joined in on the “second biggest shopping day of the year.”

Cyber Monday Predictions, 2008

Cyber Monday continues to gain momentum. Last year, Cyber Monday sales increased 21% from the previous year. Amazon.com and Wal-Mart.com boasted the top Cyber Monday sales in 2007 and I predict they’ll lead the pack again in 2008.

Economists predict that this holiday season will be slow, which could cause an increase in Cyber Monday specials. And even though the economy is faltering, the 2008 election could restore faith in our economy and spur on more shopping. If that doesn’t happen, depressed employees fresh from a pre-holiday layoff will search for Cyber Monday specials from the comfort of their homes.

Back to the big question –- is Cyber Monday here to stay? Considering it’s been on an upswing, I think 2008 will be a big year for Cyber Monday. Just like that old “Monday, Monday,” song, Cyber Monday might even outlast its creators. Far into the future, we’ll be searching for Cyber Monday specials from our offices — on the moon.
