A Brief History of Cyber Monday
Posted on 20. Jul, 2009 by shopzilla in Cyber Monday
Sure tech savvy folk know all about the history behind Cyber Monday and Cyber Monday deals, but for those of us who don’t stay on the cutting edge of online news, we looked into the history and origins of Cyber Monday. Here’s what we uncovered:
Officially coined by Shop.org, Cyber Monday evolved from the e-commerce communities’ assessment of the 2005 online holiday shopping season. More specifically, data from online stores at the time indicated sales on the Monday following Black Friday were notably higher relative to the other days. The head of Shop.org – Scott Silverman – reported a 77% uptick for the online retail industry on this now famous day. These findings led to Cyber Monday’s coronation and e-commerce stores began launching Cyber Monday specials.
Cyber Monday has received its fair share of criticism since it launched in 2005. While some internet users praise Cyber Monday as an important and unique day for onlinedeals, others believe the term is a contrived marketing ploy that has no real significance. All debates aside, Cyber Monday has become significant for online shoppers. That’s because no other day provides the scale and scope of Cyber Monday’s promotions, deals and online rebates. We’ll be keeping you informed about what is being said about Cyber Monday, and what specials to look forward to this 2009 holiday shopping season.
